Pilsner Urquell is 176 years old this year. As the name suggests, “Urquell” in German or “Prazdroj” in Czech both mean “the ancient source.” On 5 October 1842, Josef Groll had an entirely new mash ready and on 11 November 1842, the new beer was first served at the feast of Saint Martin and a legend was born.
Though the beer is not kvasnicovy (yeast beer), as there is no wort or young yeast added, it is unpasteurized and unfiltered.
Unfiltered Pilsner is available in selected pubs every October. Note that this is not the same as the more widespread tankovná (tank beer) or the unpasteurized (filtered) version, both of which are found throughout Prague and Czech Republic .
But let’s cut to the chase, our excitement is all about the Gravity cask on the brewery tour, nectar imprisoned in a vat, the one and only cellar where it’s found. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Open the tap, release it…stand back and wallow in its cloudy golden glow with a huge stable foaming white head that holds well and steady. Remember, enjoying Pilsen from the vat unleashed, untamed, unbridled, eccentric– is pure GONZO!!”
There is some nice lacing on the sides as well and the beer looks almost creamy: near-beige creamy yeast, dough, grass, hops, caramel, pale malt, cheddar, blue cheese and the Saaz hop. Tangerines, red fruits and Rich Tea biscuit. The taste is sweet, with some alkaline flavor from the yeast.
Very dry finish. Creamy mouth feel. Light carbonation. Long finish. The benchmark for Pilsner, a world-leading beer with great depth.
With some citrus notes, a few hints of orange give the beer quite a sweet taste. Huge aroma of sweet orange & citrus - smells fantastic. Thick chewy texture. Smooth on the front - crisp on the back, the beer is quite refreshing, particularly in the cellars or under the Czech sun.
