Fouaad Mirza Makes Equestrian History for India

Indian Team Takes Second, Embassy International Riding School Shares the Glory!

Did nature or nurture lead him to create history for Indian Equestrian sport?

Sunday August 26, 2018—Fouaad Mirza broke a decades-long dry spell for India Sunday by bringing home an equestrian individual medal in the Asian Games (Asiad) for the first time since 1982. Mirza also guided the Indian team to a second place overall finish.

Mirza showcased top-level riding skills in Jakarta while riding Seigneur Medicott, a former European Championship winning mount. Mirza led the event after qualifiers and only missed overall gold by nicking a single fence, dropping behind Japan’s Oiwa Yoshiaki.

The Indian team also brought home high honors for India by winning silver, the highest team result for India since the 1980s. The team included Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik and Jitender Singh. The Japanese team took gold while Thailand took bronze.

Embassy International Riding School’s chairman Mr. Jitu Virwani (center holding the flag) provided several of the horses that pushed India to a top performance. Seigneur Medicott was previously based in Germany and the school also procured three top French horses for the team.

The Embassy school (EIRS) has been committed to nurturing new talent and developing equestrian sports from their base in Bangalore, India since 1996. The school holds regular invitational competitions and serves as a training and learning facility full time, often serving as a hotel, vacation destination and training camp for dedicated equestrians.

The entire Indian team came close to missing the Asiad due to politics within the Indian Olympic Association, a situation remedied just days prior to the games. Mr. Virwani was naturally relieved, commenting “I am thankful to the IOA and the ministry for ensuring the team participated.”

Mirza is also the first Indian rider to win top honors in European events, having won his top spot during trials held in Montelibretti, Italy last year. He also competed in other European championships and trained under Bettina Hoy of Germany.

Mirza started his journey with horses as a five-year-old, and participated in regional competitions at age eight. Fouaad’s father, Dr. Hasneyn Mirza, is one of India’s notable equine veterinarians, making a childhood surrounded by horses practically inevitable.
